Lund – Part 2

Hallo meine Lieben!
EN: Dear my lovely readers!
Time flies and with it as well my swedish experiences. I’m usually super tired on evenings (exchange student problem!) that I can’t even stick to my own resolution: to write every single day in my diary. It’s almost that I write more on my blog (now you can probably imagine how much has to stand in my diary…). Anyway, I can’t really keep after all the stories which I’ve to tell. That’s the reason why I’ll write today a bit about the present and the past.
I was in Lund already five times and every single weekend spend Emma and I together with Mia. On the last post I’ve told you already about the beginning of our story. We’ll start chronological. On the 20. September I joined the Color Run. On Wednesday I went to Emma’s school and we had a nice time together at her place. The following weekend met we in Lund again. But these pictures here were actually taken on a wonderful Saturday in Oktober. We met Léa, took hundreds of pictures, talked, drunk coffee and ate perceived hundred times Fika (there will follow an extra post!).

EN: You have to know, we exchange students are a bit strange people. For example decided we spontaneously to ask some foreigners if we could take a picture with them. So we did! The austrian Lisa would probably never have done this. No clue if the people on the picture asked themselves, whether they are famous in English speaking countries (’cause we’ve asked them in English). The woman in the blue dress seemed to wonder a lot about that.
By the way: Emma, Roberts (an exchange student from Latvia), Léa and I call ourselves “The Skåne Gang”. We met us often because we all live in the same area. So if you read in other posts about our “Gang” you’ll know who it’s about.
The weekend with Mia was wonderful! I love to be in Lund and to enjoy my swedish life. The next day, a sunday, we drove kind of early together with Roberts hostfamily to the first “YFU area meeting” where all the exchange students, hostfamilies and area representatives met to reflect the experiences so far and to discuss with each other.

EN: But now to a whole different topic, which really lies on my heart and I would love to share with you. Since almost exactly one month is Emma back in the US, because she chose the half year program. We’ve tried to see each other a few times before she had to depart. It may sounds crazy, but Emma grew so much on my heart and she is somehow everything in one for me: my friend, my exchange student buddy, my sister and last but not least my soulmate. We count that we’ve met twelve times in this short five months. I mean, seriously, I know other people in Austria since almost my whole life but I don’t think that I’ve built this kind of relationship with a person in such a short time once before. But five months Sweden changes even my ideal of friendship. This exchange year connect you more to foreigners than everything else, I guess. Because everyone has made the same experiences, has the same worries and expections. And I have the feeling that I’ve experienced in this short time with Emma more than ever in my whole life with my childhood friends. I’ve made a scrapbook for Emma, with all those memories. Three days before her departure we’ve met for the last time (but hopefully not for the last of all!) at Mia’s place in Lund. We hugged for minutes, tried to keep some tears and promised each other to see us as soon as possible at some place in the world again. Then it was time to go for her. And it feels kind of empty without her, the Skåne Gang seems not to be the same anymore. Thank you so much for all the experiences which I was able to share with you, Emma! Thank you for everything, what I still can’t really express with words. We will see us again. In Sweden, in the US, in Austria. And maybe also at some other place in the world.

PS.: Das ist mein 100. Blogpost.
EN: That’s my 100. Blogpost. Since I deleted earlier almost every month my blog, I’m super happy over this small anniversary. Thanks for your feedback to every single of my posts, and for the motivation which you give me regularly through it!

COLOR RUN

Hej Hej meine Lieben!
Keine idealen Bedingungen haha.

EN: Hej everybody!
My favorite swedish city (after Gothenburg) is Lund. Just an hour with the train away and then I’m there. For the first time I was there in September to join the “Color Run” together with some other exchange students. I met there not just my friends from YFU (Kristiina, Léa, Tiffany and I) but also people from AFS. We had a groupname which couldn’t have been more typical swedish: FIKA! We had before already a small “warm-up party” and then 5 kilometers across the city – you know me well, I’m not at all a sporting ace. So I was pretty out of breath during the whole run and all the others ran more or less far away. After every kilometer you got pelted by color and afterwards, when we finished the run, again. It was definitely an experience and supercool! (Even though I’ve lost my sunglasses and got this color powder in my eye(lenses)). Before the start got all groups called to come on stage and there was a girl who photographed us with my camera. But to have more excuses for my bad condition: I had my huge backpack with me ’cause I thought you can put your stuff there in something like a locker. Since there wasn’t such a possibility, I had to carry it with me alltime. No ideal requirements haha.

EN: We decided to go to Subway to eat something. When we were back at the train station went a few already home. I contacted the day before already Emma from USA to meet in Lund. I knew her before just from the big Arrival-camp in Stockholm, but we never really talked. I met here at the train station together with Mia, her friend. First, I didn’t really understand why they know each other. Emma and I understood us directly very well. At the end, there were just us 2 and Pierluigi, an exchange student from Italy. Because Mia said Goodbye and Pierluigi had to wait for his train, went we to a wonderful café to have a fika. It was kind of expensive, but that’s normal here in Sweden. It was a weird situation, Pierluigi and I sat there coloured from top to bottom in this fancy café. We talked about this and that, for example about ice-hockey, Emma’s favorite topic. After that, we went slowly back, as Pierluigi started to run because he had to catch his train. There was just time for a short hug and a “We stay in contact!”

Fortsetzung folgt.

EN: I stayed together with Emma, because I didn’t want to go home already. We went a bit through this beautiful city and talked a lot. I still don’t get it, that we became such good friends in such a short time.
Later we met Mia again, together with her sweet daughter Ellie. Then explained Emma also to me that she met Mia on this day for the first time as well and that her mother and Mia studied many years ago together in Florida. Mia turned out as an amazing person! It was the same with Emma, we just understood us perfectly from the first moment on. In the meantime are we 3 like best friends. I mentioned that I’ve to go home soon when we went to a vegetable and fruit stall. Mia, who we knew at this time since about two hours, made us the offer, to stay overnight at her place. So could we meet Léa from France later in the night to enjoy “Kulturnatten”, an event which was arranged in Lund on this day. But to be honest: You know a person since about two hours and still are you sure you would like to stay overnight? How strange is this actually? But I didn’t even think about it in this moment. Anyway, we shopped a few things, ate ice-cream and talked to super many people on the street that Mia knows. Later we had a small Fika at Espresso House (the cheaper, but still expensive, swedish alternative to Starbucks) together with Ellie and went afterwards to a bit fancy pizza restaurant (I still wore my coloured clothes) to order pizza. Next we went to Mia’s apartment and perceived: They are real! This amazing Ikea-catalog-rooms, which are in real even more beautiful and more loving furnished than just on paper. I swear, her apartment is an only dream! Mia cycled later to the restaurant and we ate the pizza all together. The (really expensive) pizza was a dream – like everything, the whole day! We talked a lot on this evening and went to bed super late, because Emma and I met at 9 or 10pm Léa. Together we walk a bit around, stopped sometimes and talked again pretty much. Emma and I stayed after Léa drove back home. We sat on the stairs besides a kebap stall and talked super much. So much, that we didn’t look on the time, so we were back at Mia’s place at 1am.
We decided already to wake up earlier to make breakfast for Mia and Ellie – that was the least we could do for Mia’s hospitality. We tried (unsuccessful) to make coffee with Mia’s coffee brewer, Emma made (super tasty) american omelette and I set the table. They were so surprised when they woke up and truly glad – that made us happy as well. It was just a dream-weekend and I experienced all this things with such an intensity – I get to know great people and found amazing friends. When it was time for us to go back to our hostfamily’s, hugged we each other for a long time and cried. Mia is a friend for us, but somehow also our mother. We promised us to see each other as soon as possible – and that is, what we did. To be continued.

{a bit swedish nature}

{Unfortunately this time just in English!}
Hello my Loves!
So, here we go – my first post about my Sweden adventure and what I’ve already experienced.
I shot these pictures actually in September, but as you might now, I never found the words to describe all the pictures I’ve made, all the experiences. Normally I don’t get speechless so easily but it seems that every single day here just overwhelmed me. Now, after a few busy Christmas days, I have time to take a look back, to realise.
The thing is: Most of the time I gave you the impression, everything is perfect and that there were nearly no sad moments. The truth is, an exchange year without difficulties wouldn’t be an exchange year. So, I want to be honest with you and don’t write all the time about love, peace and harmony. Especially if there are some other exchange students who read this. I’ve read a lot of blogs from other exchange students before I made the decision to go for an exchange. Most of them wrote about all the wonderful things and I had a thrill of anticipation. Yeah, of course, it’s better to tell about all the amazing stuff, but to forget the negative parts of it, build sometimes too high expectations for others, who plan to go on exchange. But since we’ve talked on the preparation camp from my organisation a lot about expectations, I’ve tried not to expect a rainbow-wonderland-world during my year.
So I would like to talk a bit about my hard times, because I’ve told you until now just about all sublime moments. {And give you a small impression of the swedish nature – look how beautiful it is!}

First, I have had already two hostfamily-changes. I had to my first hostfamily directly in the beginning not a good relationship. My expectations weren’t so high but also not so low, to be honest. I didn’t really know how to deal with this situation, ’cause of course, when you arrive are you full of positive energy and that was kind of a… setback. So I just tried to make the best out of it. And that’s also a tip that I can give further to all future exchange students. If you are in a situation which doesn’t make you happy, make yourself happy. The one and half month that I’ve stayed together with them wasn’t alltime awful, because there were still school life and so on. There is always another side! And now, afterwards, I’m even thankful that I’ve made such experiences. Now I know how to handle with difficult stuff and that I can always count on lovely people like my area representative. Apropos my area representative: I guess, she’s one of the wisest and most intelligent persons I’ve ever met. Her advice helped me a lot, especially when I told her, I wish I could have a “real second family” here in Sweden. Then she told me: “Family isn’t just about parents and siblings. It’s about friends, people, who you like to be with.” At first, I couldn’t believe what she means. By the time I thought much about it, I started to understand it. My swedish friends got so unbelievable important for my swedish life, but also for my life in general. And I’ve met truly amazing people, like other exchange students and people, which I would probably never have met in Austria. As Elise has said, family can be everyone. That learned me a lesson and I’m so thankful for it!

I hear myself saying “Daddy, I really hope, it doesn’t come to a hostfamily change. Because I’ve no clue if I would be strong enough to manage all this by myself… and I won’t get homesick!”. An example how the austrian-lisa thinks. Well, from now on, I know it better. I didn’t got so much homesick that I wanted to go back immediately. And I was actually strong enough to manage all this by myself – of course not alone but with the help of great people, like above already mentioned. One day, I think it was a friday, I called my area representative to tell her, that I can’t and won’t stay in and with this family one day longer. I’ve met my area rep a few times before, since me and a teacher on my school called her 3 weeks after I arrived. Like I said earlier, it was mostly from the beginning clear (for actually both me and my hostfamily, they told me that later) that it wouldn’t work pretty well for a long time. And anyway, it wasn’t thought that I stay there longer than two months ’cause they were just an Arrivalfamily. Elise picked me up on this friday afternoon because she meant distraction would be the best for me (since I cried almost all the time during those day).

So, she picked me up – just about one hour before we talked on the phone and decided that I’ll move transitionally to her and her family. It was super spontaneous and I guess this hour between “get picked up” and “packing all my stuff” was one of the most exhausting times in my life. I packed all my stuff in my bags (at least I tried), said “Goodbye”, settled the “offical things” with my organisation and left a letter together with some sweets on their table. It was good to leave. I’m super glad everything worked out so well and for all the support I got – from my organisation but as well from my hostfamily, because I thought, they will be super surprised and ask me a lot of things to which I didn’t had an answer. But actually they were in a resigned mood and not that surprised like I expected. Their reaction was really good, because I didn’t want to hurt them in any way and it seemed they kind of expected it. I’m sure it was the best solution for all of us. And I learned: To change hostfamily is not at all a thing to shame for.

I moved to my second hostfamily, the family of my area rep. They are seriously one of the most amazing people in the world! (And now they have gotten a little baby named Ellie!) But still, for me it was just a solution for at least 2 weeks – that was designated. Unfortunately it turned out that it’s more difficult to find a new hostfamily for me. So I spend one and a half month with them. And it was actually the best makeshift I could have imagined. Still, I didn’t want to feel at home, because I knew I’ll move soon again. But if you live such a long time together with wonderful people you can’t avoid the “at home feeling” at some point. School was constantly fantastic when I talked to my organisation. They told me, they will start searching in other areas in Sweden in two weeks. But weeks before, I’ve told them already that I won’t change school – in no case.

It became sort of a race against time. I was so scared that I probably have to change school, because that was by then seriously the best thing here. I’ve told two teachers of mine about that and they supported me. In the meanwhile the family of my area rep suggested me I could stay at their place – at least until they have found a family, but even for the whole year – if I want. Actually, it didn’t take long for me to decide. Although it sounds for everyone like a “Yes, I will stay” was it for me more clear, that I will move to my third family. I had a few reasons for this decision, and even though I didn’t know what will expect me at my third hostfamily, I was attuned to move one more time. The only problem was: I still had no family. BUT, and I can’t write a bigger BUT: One of my two marvelous teachers cared so much about me, that he posted it on facebook. I didn’t even know something about it. And so it came, in just a few hours the post got shared and liked by hundred of his facebook-friends. Some interested families called my area rep and I just thought “Okay, from where come so suddenly all this calls?”. Elise visited one of them on a Saturday in November and it seemed that it fits perfectly.

We decided that I’ll move on next friday. I was super excited, because everything came so suddenly and I was just surprised. I asked her “Already so soon?” but it was kind of a wry expression, as it was planned to stay at her place just for two weeks and then it turned into six. I had a normal school week, of course I was super excited and told all my friends about it. They were so glad for me too that the search found an end! On Thursday after school I went to the place where my “new” hostmum works and talked with her just about a minute – ’cause of course, she had to work. On Friday afternoon I started packing all my stuff – again. I tried not to think about what will expect me, I was just in such a positive mood fulled with energy! I’ve packed everything more or less last minute – again. We sat in the car, driving on some road, talked a lot. And then, we arrived. I asked “Are we already here?” even though the ride took about one hour. I didn’t thought I’ll get nervous, because I didn’t even have time to think about it. Everything went so fast – again. My hostmum opened the door, a second later I’ve met my hostdad for the first time. They were at least so nervous as I. She showed me the house and then it was time to say Goodbye. It felt like leaving from Austria, maybe even worse. It felt like leaving my home, my daily life. And yeah, actually I left everything what I was used to – again. I cried, they cried, we hugged for perceived minutes.

To be honest: I regretted in the first days my decision to reject the offer of my former hostfamily. It felt like a complete new start – again. After four days I’ve met my area rep again and she just gave me the advice to wait. To give it all time. Like all her advices before, this were the right words to the right moment. And I gave it time. It was the right decision. I love my new hostfamily, they really care about me and we understand each other very well. The days went by and that means I’m living here now also already since one and a half month. And the best thing, which I finally know: I will stay until my exchange ends!

Today, the 10th January 2015, I’ve reached a half of my “year”. 150 days. Feels on one side good to be halfway “done” but on the other hand… I just want that time stops! Right now is everything perfect and Spring waits! (Okay, before I can enjoy the warm weather I’ve to go through the cold and dark swedish winter…) I’m happy everything went by like this. And there is still so much time over to experience new things! Oh, I’m super excited! My friends and I have made a huuuuge To-do List together, so it’s time to check off every single point until I’ll fly back…
Last but not least another wise advice from Elise: “Everything happens for a reason”.

the last days / before I left Austria

Hej meine Lieben!
Lisa.

EN: You probably expect (quite rightly) current news from Sweden. But there is one problem: I’ve still no idea where to start. So I request you to wait, but I promise that I’ll publish the latest news soon! By then you’ll find here more random stuff, like today. A few pictures from the days before I headed off to Sweden. My cousin Chiara came to visit us in Austria. I guess, I’ve mentioned that once already.
That was it for today, I’ve to pack my bag now! I’ll travel to Gothenburg tomorrow to meet some other exchange students there and we’re going to visit the famous Adventmarket in Liseberg!
All the best! I hope you’re all doing well.

1. Boss on tour // 2. Miss you! // 3. Daddy’s birthday present // 4.+5. Beautiful Austria // 6. Lovely Balu // 7) Lovely Luna // 8.+9. “Daddy? Please let us make a stop here, isn’t that wonderful?” // 10. Amazing summer weather, I miss it!

Laurablick – Part one

Shirt: Vero Moda / Ohrringe: no name / Hose & Jäckchen: H&M / Schuhe: Converse

Eure Liz 🙂

Liz.
